Tails is a version of Debian Linux that's built from the ground up for security. It's amnesic, resetting itself to a fresh state every reboot and erasing all files; incognito, routing all internet connections through the Tor anonymity network; and live, running off a USB instead of a computer's hard drive (and thus avoiding hard-drive malware).
If you're at risk of being tracked online, this is an extremely useful tool. It's not for everyone, though; it can be frustrating to use and is based on Linux, which is not intuitive for many users. And while its usability has improved over the years, it's still not as easy as using the operating systems most people are accustomed to.
If the Tails disk fails to start up, it may not be compatible with your Mac model/version or the latest versions of balenaEtcher and/or macOS. Try installing again on a different USB stick or use another machine. If you're unable to connect to the Tor network after starting up, try disabling MAC address anonymization (see our documentation on MAC spoofing for security implications).
Note: Wi-Fi does not work very well in Tails and it is not designed for online media consumption. If you're at risk of being tracked and need to access geo-restricted content, we recommend coughing up a couple of dollars a month for a VPN subscription. If you can't do that, you can use an Ethernet cable or share your phone's data connection via a USB WiFi adapter (USB tethering). If you do this, remember to disable MAC address anonymization afterward to prevent the device from trying to reconnect to the internet automatically.
